Shorn Victor, a mechanic from Pittsfield, won the seven-figure prize playing the Massachusetts State Lottery's “50X Cash” scratch-off game. He claimed his winnings last week.

Victor bought the ticket at Costanzo’s Package & Variety at 180 Onota St. in Pittsfield. A store clerk told him that someone had recently won big on a particular dispenser, so Victor chose to buy two tickets from a different machine.

That small tip led to a big win.

Victor opted to take the lump sum payment of $650,000 before taxes rather than the annuity. He plans to buy a house with the money, the lottery said.

Costanzo’s Package & Variety will also receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
